Therapeutic Skating and Special Olympics

The Skating Club of Phoenix has been a great supporter of the Therapeutic Skating Program and Special Olympics. About six years ago, Tammy Jimenez and Cynthia Elliott started the Therapeutic Skating Program at Oceanside Ice Arena with one skater who had cerebral palsy and only used a wheelchair! After four years of working on the ice, our first skater walked across the stage to receive her high school diploma while the entire audience applauded. The program has continued to grow with over 20 skaters of all ages and disabilities. The accomplishments of the skaters are astounding, many compete in local USFS competitions and several skaters travel to competitions such as Skate La Grande in San Diego. Special Olympics State Games and Fiesta Skate are the big events for Therapeutic skaters. One valley skater, Hope Coates, competed in Special Olympic Worlds in Japan a few years ago.

Therapeutic skating has been beneficial for all the skaters. Increased motor skills and balance are obvious benefits. Improved self confidence, building friendships and social skills are also important aspects of the skating program. The volunteers gain insight and compassion for individuals with disabilities that will be valuable throughout their lives.

Presently, the Therapeutic Skating Program is skating at Polar Ice Chandler with Cynthia Elliot and Cassandra Thomas facilitating. The program always needs volunteers and many Skating Club of Phoenix skaters have fulfilled their community service requirements by volunteering with the Therapeutic Skating Program.

Special skaters and volunteers can contact Cynthia Elliott at momofsk8r@aol.com.
