2009 Pacific Coast Sectional Championship Tickets
From Anne Curzon, 2009 Pacific Coast LOC: With some of the best skaters in the country coming to town November 13 - 16, 2008, for the 2009 Pacific Coast Sectional Championships, you may be interested in advance purchase of all-event tickets for $55 each.  For those who wish to attend all four days, this is a savings of $25 compared to the $20 daily rate.  All-event tickets are only available through pre-order (by Nov. 4).  I've attached a ticket order form that you may feel free to post or distribute.  Note that all local skaters and coaches, family, and friends will need tickets in order to watch this competition, regardless of whether they are Ice Den skaters or employees, or members of the Coyotes Skating Club of Arizona.  Ticket sales are one way that the LOC can offset the huge cost of running this competition.

Report from Anna Cumiford: "Regionals were an awesome experience. I never thought I would make it there after only skating for 1˝yrs. I was not nervous at all, because I’ve competed at this level before, until it was time to go out. But after I landed my first axel I was happy. I did not land my axel, toe loop, loop but I added a flip, toe loop, loop at the end of my program. Throughout the program I was having fun. I guess it all paid off. I got 5th out of 11 girls. My points were 20.27 and I got no deductions. I loved regionals and was proud to represent the Skating Club of Phoenix there. I really enjoyed watching the other girls and cheering them on. I can’t wait for next year!"

Congratulations to all of you. We are so proud of you for representing our club at Regionals!

Overnight Skate-A-Thon Fundraiser: A Great Success!
On Saturday, June 21 thru Sunday, June 22, 17 girls got together for an all night skate-a-thon to help raise money for the Skate Club of Phoenix.  During the night, the figure skaters raised over $400.00 for the Skating Club of Phoenix. Awards were given to Dana, Ariam, and Ciara for raising the most money.

The brave skaters arrived at the rink at 10 p.m. ready to stay up all night.  Once all of the skaters were there they got on the ice not fully sure what to do.  Soon the fun began - imagine what would you do if you were locked in the skating rink over night…we did it all!

All night races were held, some involved sliding on our backs down the ice the fastest.   who could do the longest dip.

Around 1 a.m., everyone got to have time in the spot light.  Exhibitions were held for anyone who wanted to show what they could do.  Then it was time to get silly again when all the skaters jammed out to “Soulja Boy”.

As the night went on, the figure skaters decided to try their luck with the hockey skates.  Who knew they would be so easy to skate with!  Ciara even demonstrated her famous “axel-on-hockey-skates” move for everyone.

With less than 2 hours to go before the event was to end, the chairs became the tool of choice for the races.  One girl pushed the other navigated.  Often the navigation ended up with bodies slamming into the walls….the hockey players would have been impressed with all the checking going on to win the race.

Thank goodness, Andrea Palos was her normal chipper self in the morning; she treated all the skaters to a wonderful breakfast of pancakes, bagels, sausage, fruit, and juice.  As all the skaters dragged themselves to the cars to go home, everyone agreed the night was definitely worth losing sleep over.

Governing Council News/PSA State Workshop Offering
The Club sent 4 member representatives to USFS Governing Council held in Reno, NV May 3-5. Highlights from Governing Council includes 2 rule changes concerning coaches:

  1. Beginning with the 2008-09 USFS membership season, all coaches who have joined their club as a coach will also be required to "register" with the USFS. This will incur up to a $40 fee if you are a PSA member. If you are not a PSA member, the fee will be up to $170 (to cover the insurance). This fee will cover a rulebook, liability insurance and a criminal background check. SCP is looking into how to incorporate this fee into your yearly membership and take care of the paperwork for you. Please contact Andrea Palos, SCP President, if you have any suggestions or comments.
  2. Effective September 1, 2007, all registered coaches will have a "mandatory education requirement." Educational credits will be available through PSA and USFS from approved seminars, etc. What the educational requirement will be and when it will be required has not been fully detailed, but it will most likely follow a structure similar to that which the PSA already has in place.

SC of Phoenix will be hosting a PSA State Workshop tentatively scheduled for this summer at the Peoria rink. The Basic Accreditation exam and Sports Science written exams will be offered. Attending this workshop should count toward any educational requirement that might be detailed soon.

All the details from Governing Council, including the "Combined Report of Action" should be available on the USFS Web Site soon. Visit http://www.usfigureskating.org/event_details.asp?id=37133.
