A Word About Coaches

The PSA (Professional Skating Association) is organization of ice skating professionals engaged in the instruction, training and performance of ice skating. Many coaches work hard to obtain their PSA rating/ranking by attendance in ongoing seminars and schooling. Please take some time to learn your coaches' accomplishments and success stories.

USFS Gold Medalist: This means the coach/skater has passed the highest level test the USFS offers (Senior FS, MIF, Pair, Gold Dance). There are 8 Freestyle tests, each of which has a corresponding MIF test that must be passed prior to taking the Freestyle test.

USFS Gold Dance test: This means the coach/skater has passed 7 levels of ice dance tests, for a total of 23 individual dances.

USFS Silver Medalist: The coach/skater has passed the second highest level test the USFS offers (Junior FS, Pair, or MIF; Pre-Gold Dance).

USFS Adult Gold Medalist: USFS offers 4 levels of testing for adult skaters. Skaters must be 25 years old to test in this category. Tests are offered in MIF, Singles, Pairs, Ice Dance.

PSA Rating: Ratings certify that a coach has been rigorously tested on technique, safety, ethics, & equipment. There are 4 levels of ratings: Registered, Certified, Senior, & Master. Ratings exams are oral and last about 45 minutes. Each level requires a corresponding written Sports Science exam which tests knowledge of off-ice training, nutrition, body mechanics, sports psychology, and more.

For an average (that is non-famous!) coach, it generally takes 2 years to complete a Master rating. Master ratings can only be taken at the Annual PSA Conference, and most have a 5 year experience requirement.

MIF: Moves in the Field. Part of the USFS testing structure. An MIF test is required at each level prior to taking the corresponding freeskate test for that level. MIF tests may be taken independently of freeskating, pairs, and dance tests without effect on USFS competitive level. MIF teach all fundamental edges and turns while developing increasing edge quality, extension, quickness and power.
